Hernando County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Stegner
April 15, 2007 Spring Hill, Florida
          Early Friday Morning, April 13, 2007 Deputy Michael Stegner of the Hernando County Sheriff's Department died when the unmarked patrol he was driving hit a wrecker at 4 am. The accident happened at Spring Hill Drive and Pinehurst. Deputy Stegner was off duty at the time of the accident. He is greatly missed by his friends and fellow officers in the Hernando Sheriff's office and the community he served.


          Law Enforcement Officers from throughout the state came to honor Deputy Stegner and his family.
          Jason Wagner, Stegner's Close Friend: “You can't believe it's happening. No way, keep thinking it's not him, got the name wrong… He was a great guy, a funny, hard worker.”
          Wagner: “Here to help everybody in the community he fit the definition of a police officer ready to serve ready to step in do what he needed to do family friends were protected.”
Police work runs in the family. Michael's father is a Hernando detective. His mother and sister work in the sheriff's office.
           Donna Black, Spokesperson for Hernando Sheriff's Office: “We're shocked and devastated. This is a close knit agency."
           Deputy Michael Stegner's coworkers call him a rising star.

          It was with a heavy heart that we said our farewells to Deputy Stegner. We are grateful for his service and our prayers go out to his family and friends. It was an honor to stand at his funeral and show our respect for this dedicated young man who gave his all in the service of his community. Stand down Deputy Stegner and rest in peace.
